3 AI tools to add to your writing toolkit

ChatGPT spooked us a bit when it first arrived. But as more AI tools have surfaced, we’ve transitioned from fear to figuring out how they can help. Here are three of our favourite tools…

With the pace of technology change, marketers are increasingly expected to do more in less time. And lack of time can hinder creativity. So how can you write more content while also meeting tighter deadlines?

Use AI as your sidekick.

Generative AI can’t effectively replace meaningful content written by a skilled writer. But it can be a powerful tool to save you time and take your writing to the next level. Around 80% of marketers and creatives say Gen AI tools allow them to focus on the more exciting parts of their job.

By using AI to automate basic tasks or kickstart your creativity, you can devote more time and energy to the stuff that requires a human touch.

But with so many AI tools flooding the marketplace, it can be hard to find the right ones. Not to mention get the most value out of them. Let’s look at three AI tools we like to use in the Writers studio and how they can help you.

1. Spark new ideas with Claude

Often, the hardest part of writing is getting words on a page. It’s no fun staring at a blank page and blinking cursor when deadlines are calling your name.

That’s where Claude can step in.

Claude is like ChatGPT but with a glow up. You can go to Claude for help with sparking new topic ideas, developing a blog or article outline, drafting social posts and more. Here’s an example of how I got Claude to help me come up with an outline and headline ideas for this blog post:

Now, I didn’t use any of Claude’s ideas verbatim, but I did use them as a springboard.

When working with Claude and other similar tools (like ChatGPT and Google Gemini), remember to treat each as a junior writer. You still need to put in the work to give them a brief and have a chat to get good results.

And don’t skip the editing step. The content an AI language tool produces should never be the final product. There’s already a lot of bot-generated content roaming the internet streets. If you hit ‘publish’ before adding your personal touch, your content could get lost in the crowd of sameness. Plus, AI tools are prone to making up stuff – the last thing you want is to post incorrect information and hurt your organisation’s reputation.

2. Give your sentences a WordTune-up

Sometimes, there’s one sentence that just doesn’t seem to land. No matter how hard you try, you struggle to come up with a better way of wording it. It could be that you haven’t got the right words, the right order of words, or you’ve got too many words altogether.

Well, Wordtune’s got you. It helps you re-write, shorten a sentence or make it more casual or formal. Here’s an example of it in action.

I asked Claude to give me a long-winded sentence:

Despite the immense potential of groundbreaking AI advancements to radically transform numerous industries through unprecedented innovation, it is crucial that we approach this technological revolution with prudence and foresight, remaining ever vigilant to the complex ethical implications that could arise, and striving to ensure these powerful AI tools are developed and deployed in a manner that prioritizes human welfare, upholds human dignity, and safeguards individual autonomy.

As you can see, it’s an overwhelming read. So, I shared the sentence with Wordtune and clicked the ‘shorten’ function (see the screenshot below):

And this was the output:

AI advances have the potential to radically transform a variety of industries through unprecedented innovation. However, we must approach this technological revolution with foresight, keeping a constant eye out for any ethical implications, and developing and deploying these powerful AI tools with respect for human dignity, individual autonomy, and welfare.

It’s now re-worded and split into two sentences, making the message easier to digest. But the second sentence is still a little too long. I asked Wordtune to shorten it gave me this:

AI advances have the potential to radically transform a variety of industries through unprecedented innovation. Nevertheless, we must develop and deploy these powerful AI tools with respect for human dignity, individual autonomy, and welfare in mind.

Much better. But even so, I’d still put my editor hat on and tweak it more.

3. Use TextFX to keep it fresh

If you want a message to stick, you need to make it memorable. The same goes for grabbing your reader’s attention through taglines, headlines and subject lines.

It’s not as easy as it seems.

But it can be easier with this next AI tool. Meet TextFX, the self-described AI-powered tool for rappers, writers and wordsmiths. From finding new angles to similes and alliteration, TextFX helps get your creative juices flowing. You can use it to warm up or get a nudge in the right direction to escape the dreaded creative block.

Here’s a glimpse of how it works. I wanted to come up with a simile for writing, so I typed ‘writing’ in the Simile function of the tool and hit ‘run’:

TextFX then gave me a list of similes to work with:

  • Writing is like a river, it starts off slowly and then gains momentum as it flows through your mind.
  • Writing is like peeling an onion, layer by layer, revealing more of the truth with each new revelation.
  • Writing is like fishing, and the fish is the perfect word.
  • Writing is like putting together a puzzle, each piece fitting into place until the whole picture is revealed.
  • Writing is like mining for gold—you have to dig through a lot of dirt and rock to find the precious nuggets, but when you do, it’s worth all the effort.

Using literary techniques like similes and metaphors can help your reader better connect with your content for more impact.

Experiment with these AI tools for your own content and see what works for you. Remember, these tools are assistants and not replacements for human creativity. They’re no match for writing with empathy. And it’s empathy that will give your message a competitive edge.
